INSTITUTIONAL ANIMAL ETHICS COMMITTEE (IAEC)


The Institutional Animal Ethics Committee (IAEC) oversees the operations of the Animal Housing Facility on campus. The Facility, which is a part of the Department of Pharmacology, GRCP, is a CPCSEA-approved unit that is licensed with (CPCSEA Registration No: 1175/PO/Re/S/2008/CPCSEA). It is licensed to conduct and support experiments on small laboratory animals like guinea pigs, rabbits, rats, and mice. The Animal Housing Facility adheres strictly to standard operating procedures. This ensures assessing the quality and consistency of research proposals, and preventing the infliction of unnecessary pain and suffering on animals before, during, and after experiments. The Facility is under CCTV surveillance as per the CPCSEA norms.

Roles and responsibilities of IAEC @ GRCP


  1. The IAEC conducts timely reviews to assess all research proposals involving animal experiments.
  2. The committee analyse proposals to ascertain the ethics of the study and regularly monitor on-going studies to ensure the welfare of the animals involved.
  3. The committee is also responsible for ensuring that all regulatory requirements are complied with, that all guidelines have been followed, and that the law as dictated by apex bodies has been adhered to.
  4. All records of the experiments performed on animals are maintained in the Department.
